Possible Events: Susan G Komen 3-Day

About 3-Day
The Susan G Komen 3-Day for the Cure is one gigantic walk-a-thon. The events start on Friday with a 20 mile walk. You then rinse wash and repeat on both Saturday and Sunday.

Linked Charities
The linked charity is pretty obvious on this one, the Susan G Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation.

Training Needs
This is one of the very few events that would require no training. 60 miles seems like a lot, and it is, but its not really the tiredeness of walking 60 miles its the amount of time its going to take. It's going to be very long 3 days.

Team Size
No need for a team, can participate by myself if I want.

Boston July 27th-29th
Philadelphia October 5-7th
DC October 12th-14th

Possible Events: Ragnar Relay Race

About Ragnar
The Ragnar Relay Race series, is a 200 mile team road race. Yes 200 miles. The race is competed with a max of 12 members per team with 36 different legs. Each member will end up running approximately 15 miles a piece split pretty evenly over each individual leg.

Linked Charities
A portion of each race benefits local charities but they do not have one major sponsor.

Training Needs
The needs for this race are similar to that of a half or full marathon, essentially get up and run a lot. Perhaps not at 13 miles a clip but pretty close.

Team Size
In order to participate in this event I would need to gather up 11 teammates. 11 people willing to run at minimum 14 miles in 24 hours.

Possible Ragnars for Me to Participate In
2012 dates are not yet set, but New England (New Haven to Boston) was run in May of 2011. Same goes for New York (Bethel to Westchester). DC is being run in September.

Possible Events: Muddy Buddy

About Muddy Buddy
Muddy Buddy is 2 man team event that makes you navigate a 6 - 7 mile course on foot and bike with obstacles incorporated throughout. The Muddy Buddy is similar in concept to the Tough Mudder, however on the surface seems much less challenging.

Linked Charities
Muddy Buddy is linked to the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The objective is to raise money towards the donation of sports chairs or hand cycles for the use of disabled athletes.

Training Needs
Muddy Buddy honestly does not seem like something that you need to get on a specific training regiment. It's approximately 7 miles, of which roughly 1/2 is running and 1/2 is biking. Muddy Buddy is an event that I think could fit in at any month of the year and I should be able to accomplish it without too much difficulty.

Possible Events: Cross Country Skiing

Why Cross Country Skiing?
Similar to snowshoeing, when you're looking for 12 different type of races you need to think about things that you can do in the New England winter. Obviously Cross Country Skiing is the major Olympic cardio event.

About Snowshoeing
Nordic, or Cross Country, Skiing has been a part of the Winter Olympics forever. If you have no idea what it is, then you probably don't know much about skiing.

Training Needs
Unlike Snowshoeing which seems mostly like running / hiking with weird shoes on, Cross Country skiing is different and I would need to practice, practice, practice. When and where, I have no idea. I've been skiing exactly once since I was 12 and that was last year. I found that I was astronomically better at Alpine skiing than Nordic skiing. If I attempted to do a 5 or 10K without practicing, I would fail miserably.

TBD.. I started reaching out to a few different organizations and will have to keep a look out at the schedule to find something in January or February.

Why Snowshoeing?
When you're looking for 12 different type of races you need to think a bit out of the box, and you need to think about things that you can do in the New England winter. Showshoeing was one of the winter possibilities that came to mind.

About Snowshoeing
In case you don't know what snowshoeing is, there are a few good resources to find out. You might as well start here at Snowshoe Mag. To sum it up in a short sentence "You put on shoes that distribute your weight more widely so that you don't sink into the snow when walking on it."

Training Needs
Outside of straight cardio training, leg strength exercises and practicing a few times, I'm not sure if there are any training needs. The idea would be to either run a 5K or a 10K depending on how adventurous I feel.
